Early Life and Career
Donald T. Regan was born on December 21, 1918, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated from Holy Cross College and Harvard Business School. Regan began his career in finance at Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, where he eventually became CEO.
Treasury Secretary
In 1981, Regan was appointed the 66th United States Secretary of the Treasury by President Ronald Reagan. As Treasury Secretary, he oversaw the implementation of the Reagan administration's economic policies, including tax cuts and deregulation.
White House Chief of Staff
In 1985, Regan was promoted to White House Chief of Staff. He played a pivotal role in the Reagan administration's domestic and foreign policy decisions. However, a public relations gaffe led to his resignation in 1987.
