Tiktok Ban Us 2023

TikTok Ban Law Passes Senate

Bill Would Force Sale or Ban of App

Deadline Set for Compliance

WASHINGTON - Tucked inside the sprawling $95 billion national security package headed to President Joe Biden's desk is a provision that could have major implications for the popular social media app TikTok.

The provision, sponsored by Sens. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), would force TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the app within 90 days. If ByteDance fails to comply, the bill would ban TikTok from operating in the United States.

The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 64-35 on Saturday, April 23, 2024. It now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The Trump administration has been pressuring TikTok to sell its U.S. operations, citing national security concerns. The company has denied that it poses a security risk.

If the bill becomes law, it would give TikTok until July 22, 2024 to find a buyer. The president could push back the deadline by an additional 90 days, but that would mean that without a sale, TikTok could shut down as early as October 22, 2024.
