Liverpool's hopes of a successful Europa League campaign were dealt a blow on Thursday evening as Atalanta claimed a shock 2-0 victory at Anfield in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
The Italian side, who stunned Real Madrid in the group stages, proved too strong for Jurgen Klopp's men, with second-half goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens securing a memorable triumph.
Ilicic broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, cutting inside and firing a low shot past Alisson Becker. Just four minutes later, Gosens doubled Atalanta's lead with a brilliant header from Hans Hateboer's cross.
Liverpool had chances to get back into the game, but Mohamed Salah missed a penalty and Sadio Mane headed wide from close range. Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini also made several impressive saves to keep the clean sheet intact.
The result leaves Liverpool with an uphill task in the second leg, which will be played in Bergamo on March 17. Klopp will need to find a way to inspire his team to a comeback if they are to progress to the quarter-finals.
